True Dream: To purge his inner turmoil and live a peaceful life
Family: Kenshin's parents died of cholera when he was, what, five? After the resulting orphanage, he was traveling with some slave traders as their cargo when the whole caravan, or whatever, was attacked by bandits. The bandits slew everyone, except for Kenshin (who was still called by his original name, Shinta, the name his parents had given him at birth) because three women- Kasumi, Akane, and Sakura, who were all sold into slavery to pay off someone else's debts- shielded him with their bodies. Once they were dead, reducing their bodies from a protective barrier for an orphaned child to meat shields, the bandits came toward Shinta (Kenshin) saying a cliche line about how they were going to put him out of his misery. He was saved- which is total duh, because he obviously survived, or the series wouldn't have been here- when Saijiro Hiko killed the bandits hovering like wingless crows over the young Shinta (again, that was Kenshin's pre... well, pre-Kenshin name). Saijiro told Shinta to go to a near-by town and ask for shelter, then walked off. Less than a week later- though how much less, I do not know- Saijiro visited the town himself and inquired about a little boy seeking shelter, only to hear there weren't any newcomers, even a stray cat. Resigning himself to the fact that he was unable to help the child he met, and assuming the boy had probably committed suicide, Saijiro went to bury the bodies. To his shock, when Saijiro arrived, he saw that all the bodies had been buried. All the graves even had markers. And, standing in the middle of the make-shift cemetery, was the little boy.
Sajiro Hiko: "You made graves for those bandits, as well as your parents?"
Shinta: "They're slave traders, not my parents. My parents died from cholera last year. But bandit or slave trader, they're still people. And they're dead."
Saijiro Hiko: "So you made graves for them?"
*Sajiro's gaze shifts to the three stones Shinta was standing in front of, and obviously had been for some time*
Sajiro Hiko: "What are those three stones?"
Shinta: "Miss Kasumi, Miss Akane, and Miss Sakura... All three of them were sold off to pay some debts. I only know them for a day. But since I was the only boy there, and since I had no parents, I was ready to throw away my life to save them. That's why I tried to look for some good stones for them. But these were all I found. I don't even have any flowers."
Sajiro Hiko: "What's your name, boy?"
Shinta: "Shinta."
Saijiro Hiko: "That's too gentle a name for a swordsman. From now on, your name will be Kenshin."
Thus, Shinta was left behind, and Kenshin Himura was born.
